CREW OF THE YEAR: Hobart Varsity Eight
The Hobart Varsity Eight was selected as the Liberty League Crew of the Year. Hobart's varsity eight of Greg Narzikul, Carter Weitekamp, Patrick Overton, Ben Robinson, Harrison Luce, Sam Ash, Dilan Bower, Alberto Wray, and Anthony Giovenelli grabbed gold medals at the Liberty League Championships on May 4. They powered the Statesmen down the 2,000-meter course to a time of 6:49.200. In the middle 1,000 Hobart rallied to retake the lead and post an open-water win over Ithaca. It was Hobart's 14th consecutive gold medal in the varsity eight.
NOVICE CREW OF THE YEAR: St. Lawrence Novice Eight
The St. Lawrence Novice Eight was selected as the Liberty League Novice Crew of the Year. The Saints novice eight finished the spring season unbeaten and as both the Liberty League and New York State Novice Eight Champions. St. Lawrence won the Liberty League novice final in 7:21.500 with a nine-second lead on the second-place boat from RIT. At the New York State Collegiate Championships, the Saints edged Ithaca by 3.745 seconds to take first in the event for its final win of the season. In the fall, the Saints won a the Head of the Rideau and finished sixth at the Head of the Fish. Members of the Novice Eight include: Oliver Van Everen, Cameron DeLo, Peter Mueller, Sage Richards, Travis Hayward, Samuel Fox, Matthew Parent, Kai Jensen and coxswain Mairead Drake.
COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR: Hobart College – Head Coach Paul Bugenhagen; Assistant Coach Skip Kielt
Hobart head coach Paul Bugenhagen and assistant coach Skip Kielt were selected as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Bugenhagen coached the Statesmen varsity eight and second varsity eight crews to first-place finishes at the Liberty League Championship. The varsity eight rallied to win in 6:49.20, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of second-place Ithaca. The Hobart second varsity eight cruised to victory in 6:48.30, finishing more than 25 seconds ahead of second-place RIT. Hobart also claimed three medals at the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) as the third varsity eight took gold, the second varsity eight took silver and the varsity eight earned bronze.
