Five from Liberty League earn ECAC weekly honors

A total of five student-athletes from the Liberty League have been honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for outstanding play during the week ending March 30. Skidmore senior Lee Ford went 3-0 at No. 2 singles, and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles to help lead the Thoroughbreds to a 3-0 week including wins over two nationally ranked opponents.

Sam Caruso – Union
Senior, Glen Falls, N.Y.


Union senior outfielder Sam Caruso went 9-for-14 in four games for the Dutchmen last week. Caruso was the catalyst of the offense driving in two runs while scoring once in the Dutchmen's sweep of the University of Chicago on March 24. He also went 1-2 with a walk in the Dutchmen's matchup with No. 16 Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Jake Fishman – Union
Freshman, Sharon, Mass.


Union freshman pitcher Jake Fishman threw a no-hitter in his second collegiate start on Saturday, March 29 against Liberty League foe Bard. The freshman threw all seven innings in game one of the scheduled double header versus Bard. He struck out seven batters while allowing only two walks to lead the Dutchmen to their first league victory of the season. Fishman is now 2-0 on the season after leading the Dutchmen to victory against Keene State in his first appearance in the season by striking out seven batters and allowing only one run in seven innings of work.

Division III Upstate Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Aubree Piepmeier – Vassar
Senior, Franklin, Mass.


Vassar senior distance runner Aubree Piepmeier had a banner day at Monmouth University Saturday afternoon, as she posted a time of 4:42.81 in the 1500 meter run, finishing first overall. The time was the school record for the event, and also was the 10th best time in the nation in the event this year.

Lee Ford – Skidmore
Senior, Newton, Mass.


In a 3-0 week, including matches against two nationally ranked teams and one regionally ranked team, Skidmore College senior Lee Ford went 3-0 at number two singles and 2-1 at number one doubles. In a 6-3 win over No. 21 Mary Washington, she won a three-set match 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Shelby Harris. She came back the next day for another three-set win in a 5-4 victory over No. 27 Case Western, beating Sara Zargham 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1. She also won at number one doubles with Madeline Benn 8-5. In a 7-2 win over Oberlin, Ford won 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 at number two singles and 8-2 at number on doubles.

Division III Upstate Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Daniel Cooper – Vassar
Sophomore, Piedmont, Calif.


Cooper was a perfect 4-for-4 this past weekend in Liberty League play at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots. He teamed with Alexander Luckmann in both doubles matches, winning against St. Lawrence's Rob Schmitz and Paul Barret 8-2 and RIT's Amos Baptiste and Chandler Daub 8-4. Cooper then defeated the Saints' Rhonny Rosario 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday and had an easy first set but difficult second set against the Tigers' Daub. Cooper walked away with the 6-0, 7-6 win.
