Liberty League announces 2011-12 men's squash awards
The Liberty League has announced its 2011-12 All-League awards for men's squash. Sixteeen award winners were recognized. The major award winners and all-league teams are listed below.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Andres Duany, Rochester
Duany, who was an All-American as a sophomore in 2010-11, posted a 3-0 record at the 2011-12 League championships, defeating opponents from the #1 positions at Vassar, SLU, and Hobart. He won all three matches 3-0 and reached quarterfinals of the CSA Individual National Championships. At the CSA Team Championships, Duany defeated Yale's Richard Dodd, 3-0, at #2 as Rochester rallied for 5-4 team win. He played in #1 spot as well during his just-completed junior year and posted a 9-5 record.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Kyle Ogilvy, St. Lawrence
Ogilvy became the first Saint to reach the round of 8 at the College Squash Association Individual Championships. He became the first Saint to reach the Molloy Division quarterfinals at CSA Individual nationals, going 3-1 in the tournament. Oglivy played one and two for the Saints as a rookie, going 1-3 at one and 6-7 at two for a 10-11 overall record.
COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR: Rochester, Martin Heath - head coach
Heath continued Rochester's success among the elite levels of collegiate squash in 2011-12. He led the Yellowjackets to their fifth straight Liberty League squash championship. Rochester finished fifth at the College Squash Association Team Championships this year, beating Yale, 5-4, in the fifth place match. Over the last four years, the Yellowjackets have been ranked third, fourth, and fifth (twice) in the final CSA Poll. Heath was ranked as high as #4 individually when he competed on an international basis. His recruiting work has paid handsome dividends for the Yellowjackets who boast an international lineup.
